🍼 Improving Breast Milk Calories Through Nutritional Support

Presented by: Professor Perla Karina Garcia May
Affiliation: ISSSTE, Mexico
Presentation Type: Oral Presentation
Title: Calorie content of breast milk: Response to a weekly nutritional strategy for breastfeeding mothers

🔍 Understanding Breast Milk Nutrition

Adequate maternal nutrition during lactation plays a vital role in supporting both infant growth and maternal health. During breastfeeding, nutritional demands increase significantly due to continuous breast milk production. However, many lactating women do not meet recommended energy and micronutrient intake levels, which may affect milk quality.

This study evaluates how weekly nutritional counseling influences the calorie content of breast milk, measured through crematocrit analysis.

🧪 Study Design & Methodology

• Prospective, observational, and longitudinal study
• Conducted at the Human Milk Bank, José María Rodríguez General Hospital, State of Mexico
• Included 20 donor mothers
• Weekly nutritional counseling for 3 consecutive weeks, followed by evaluation one month later
• Total study duration: 7 weeks

🔹 Nutritional guidance followed a 2,500 kcal/day diet, aligned with international recommendations:

·         50% carbohydrates

·         26–27% protein

·         23–24% fat

Crematocrit levels were measured weekly to assess changes in milk calorie content.

📊 Key Findings

• Significant and progressive increase in breast milk calorie content
• Average crematocrit increase of 43.5% after nutritional counseling
• Improvement observed regardless of gestational age
• Nutritional intake directly influenced breast milk energy value

These findings highlight that maternal diet plays a crucial role in enhancing breast milk quality.

Conclusions

Nutritional education is essential for breastfeeding mothers
Personalized dietary counseling improves breast milk calorie content
Crematocrit values are influenced more by maternal nutrition than gestational age
Weekly guidance supports healthier outcomes for both mothers and infants
