Healing the Brain: How Acupuncture Restores Neuroplasticity in Children with Cerebral Palsy – A Keynote by Prof. Zhenhuan Liu

The upcoming International Conference on Pediatrics, Neonatology, and Child Health (IPN 2026) will feature an extraordinary keynote presentation by Prof. Zhenhuan Liu from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, China.

Prof. Liu’s presentation, titled Neuroimaging by Evaluation Nerve Renovate and Neuroplasticity of Acupuncture in Children with Cerebral Palsy,” explores how acupuncture stimulates brain repair, boosts neuroplasticity, and supports motor and cognitive development in children with cerebral palsy.

His research bridges ancient healing wisdom with modern neuroimaging science, showing that acupuncture can play a significant role in neurological rehabilitation.

🌟 Research Highlights from Prof. Liu’s Presentation

Focus of the Study:
To assess how acupuncture influences brain remodeling, nerve regeneration, and neurotrophic factor expression, helping children with cerebral palsy achieve better movement and brain function recovery.

Clinical Study Overview:

·         A randomized controlled trial involving 1,224 participants (146 with brain injury and 1,078 with cerebral palsy).

·         Evaluation methods included:

o    Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM)

o    Peabody Fine Motor Test

o    Gesell Developmental Scale

o    Transcranial Doppler (TCD)

o    Brain MRI, PET, SPECT, and DTI scans

Key Findings:

·         Extracellular space recovery: 92.3% in acupuncture group vs. 70.8% in control.

·         TCD efficiency: 79.3% vs. 51.8% (p < 0.05).

·         Neurological recovery rate: 87% in acupuncture group (p < 0.01).

·         MRI improvement: 59.55% (13.25% higher than control).

·         SPECT recovery: 96.4% in acupuncture group (p < 0.01).

·         Long-term results: 91.3% improvement at 1-year follow-up.

·         White matter fiber integrity: Higher FA values after 60 acupuncture sessions.

Conclusion:
Acupuncture effectively enhances brain neuroplasticity, improves motor and fine motor functions, strengthens cognitive and language abilities, and promotes independence and self-care in children with cerebral palsy.
