Tracking Post-Pandemic Infection Trends: A Closer Look at Childhood Diseases in Bosnia & Herzegovina

At the upcoming International Conference on Pediatrics, Neonatology and Child Health, scheduled for March 26–28, 2026 in Singapore & Online, Dr. Svjetlana Mikulić from the University Clinical Hospital Mostar will present an insightful virtual poster exploring how the COVID-19 era reshaped the landscape of pediatric infectious diseases.

Her study, titled The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology of common childhood infections in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (2018–2024),” provides an in-depth look at how routine childhood infections shifted dramatically before, during, and after the pandemic.

Key Highlights of the Presentation

·         Sharp decline in common infections (measles, influenza, varicella) during 2020–2021 due to lockdowns, school closures, social distancing, and reduced viral exposure.

·         Influenza incidence collapsed, dropping from 9,295 cases (2019) to just 248 cases (2020), with a strong rebound in 2023 to 11,122 cases.

·         Varicella cases fell significantly, decreasing from 6,657 (2019) to 2,073 (2020), then surging to an unprecedented 11,421 cases in 2023.

·         Measles virtually disappeared between 2020–2022, followed by a major resurgence in 2023 with 4,520 reported cases.

·         Immunity gaps widened, driven by missed vaccinations and reduced natural exposure during prolonged pandemic restrictions.

·         Early 2024 trends show partial stabilization, but infection levels remain above the pre-pandemic average.

·         Urgent need for catch-up vaccination, stronger surveillance, and renewed public health communication to prevent future outbreaks among children.
