๐Ÿ“ฑ Empowering Parents Through Proactive Mobile App Support

Presenter: Winsome LAM

Presentation Type: Poster Presentation (In-Person)

Title: Nurse parental support using a proactive mobile app to enhance parental self-efficacy in symptom management for the children requiring mechanical ventilation

๐Ÿง  Presentation Highlights

๐Ÿ‘ฉ️ Background

Children with medical complexity (CMC) who require mechanical ventilation often experience significant physical and psychological symptoms that affect their quality of life. Strengthening parental self-efficacy in symptom management is crucial for improving outcomes.

In Hong Kong, home-based nursing services support these families, but workforce shortages limit accessibility. A proactive nurse-supported mobile app offers an innovative way to extend care, enhance nurse-parent interaction, and provide continuous home-based support.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Study Aim

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a 3-month nurse-led mobile app intervention in improving parental confidence in managing symptoms of children requiring mechanical ventilation.
It also examines real-world implementation using the RE-AIM framework (Reach, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance).

๐Ÿงช Methods

·         Single-group pre-post quasi-experimental design

·         Estimated sample size: 52 parents

·         43 parents recruited to date

·         Data collected via questionnaires & interviews

·         Outcomes measured:

o    ๐Ÿ’ช Caregiving self-efficacy

o    ๐Ÿฉบ Symptom burden

o    ๐Ÿฅ Health service utilization

Assessments occur at four time points over nine months.

๐Ÿ“Š Current Progress

Recruitment and data collection are progressing smoothly. All 43 participants have completed initial assessments.

๐ŸŒŸ Expected Impact

The intervention is anticipated to:

·         Improve parental confidence

·         Reduce symptom burden in children

·         Decrease unnecessary healthcare utilization

·         Provide a scalable digital nursing support model

This study highlights how digital health innovation can strengthen family-centered care for children with complex medical needs.
